Darwin Awards Bangs DALL-E and Chat GPT
Part handyman and part mad scientist, the workshop owner had a smarter plan...
TRAGIC TRIPWIRE TRIUMPH
20 August 2022 || Araxá City, Brazil
Fed up with thieving thieves, a machine workshop owner gets serious about installing a crime prevention system. Cameras? Nah. This handy man has a more…convincing security plan. The 60-year-old—vision clouded by cataracts—wires up a nearly-invisible copper wire to act as a trigger for his gun.
“The device demonstrated unique electrical skills.”
—Weapons expert Mr Thiago Oliveira::
“[Any slight tug on] the invisible copper wire activates a spring that connects an electrical socket to the back of the gun. The gun is fixed firmly in place and ‘loaded with gunpowder, a sphere, and bushing.' When the circuit is closed, an electrical spark ignites the gunpowder and propels a projectile toward the door.”
—
While this was not the safest contraption, it was a well-constructed and fully functional contraption. Fortunately—no thieving thieves crept into the workshop that first night scouting for tools to steal. Unfortunately—our inventor walked into his workshop the next morning and triggered the “Find Out” phase of his invention.
Who doesn't love a locked & loaded booby trap?
The act of entering the workshop disturbed the copper wire, and exactly as planned his gun fired a bullet at the doorway where he stood holding his morning coffee…
The handyman now is enjoying The Great Workshop In The Sky. and thieves are no concern. The inventor’s lasting legacy is a warning to us all —
—When it comes to security,
—“Just Say No” to DIY inspiration.
—The life you save could be your own.
Author Wendy would LOVE to receive your comments about the experimental writing assistants CHAT-GPT (co-pilot) and DALL-E (illustrator). This-here post required a lot of experimentation and personal rewriting.
Tomorrow we offer the first NEW Darwin Award of 2023.
Stay In Tune!
Hi Kimi Wei. YES I did a LOT of rewriting. It will take time and experiment to craft the correct prompts. It may be about impossible -- a story. must lead off with something punchy but not too revealing. There can be many subtle jokes incorporated into a simple flow, but ChatGPT is not yet subtle. ChatGPT will compare my version and its own, which helps me iterate toward a better ruleset. I am happy with gradual results.
Yes I love the folksy version too, thank you for your feedback on that.
My experiments with DALL-E are unwieldy, like guiding a yacht with a rowboat rudder. CHAT-GPT crafted an excellent prompt and I only needed to iterate once to get this image.
Do you work in AI?
Hi Wendy, Kimi Wei here. Hope you are well! Did you need to do a lot of rewriting b/c ChatGPT got things wrong or b/c the story simply required it? I noticed that in the linked version (that's the original, right?) there were many folksy elements which are gone from this version. I kind of like the folksy notes. How about the picture? Did DALL-E create a picture for you, or just find one?
